BELL MILLS DRIFFIELD ORIGINALLY PAPER CARPET FLAX & FLOUR DESTROYED BY FIRE 1949. CARD IN EXCELLENT CONDITION IT HAS BEEN POSTED AND HAS A MESSAGE SENT TO A NEARBY RELATION IN BEVERLEY. IT WAS POSTED MAY 1906. The first reference to milling in the family occurs in 1838 when William Wrigglesworth, was recorded at Foston on the Wolds in the baptism entry of his daughter, Martha Ellen, as ‘Miller of this parish’. There are two references to William in 1840 at Dyegarth Mill, Great Driffield. The first was in White’s Directory and the second was in the baptism entry of his son, John. William would appear to have been in partnership with Chambers Sproxton, which partnership was formally dissolved on 04 March 1851, though it sparked a Court of Chancery case in 1855.Within days, ie 1851 Census, William was at Bell Mills, Skerne and stayed there until his death in 1861. His son, John, continued there until bankruptcy in 1879. In the 1881 Census the premises were unoccupied. The origins of Bell Mills dated back to 1754 when a paper mill was established on the site. However, the locality was not unconnected with manufacture, for there must have been a mill of some sort in the neighbourhood at an earlier date, which mill had burnt down prior to the 1742 enclosure of Driffield, for the award referred to the neighbourhood of the present Bell Mills, as ‘Burnt Mill Bridge.’ In 1792 the paper mill was demolished and rebuilt as a textile and carpet manufactory by William and Thomas Atkinson for Richard and William Porter. Considerable capital was invested, not merely in building and equipping the mill, but cutting and altering the water-courses, with a new cut, nearly half a mile in length, embankments and a dam. This followed the founding of a similar factory, earlier in 1792, at nearby Wansford, by Thomas and Christopher Bainton and Thomas Boyes. In 1796 the Porters became Sheepshanks and Porter, when the former gentleman, from a wealthy Leeds clothmaking family, bought into the business. However, by 1812 carpet manufacture had ceased and Bell Mills was a large manufactory for spinning and weaving textiles. In 1823 the business collapsed, hardly surprising as it was competing with businesses from the West Riding where sources of raw material, wool, and sources of power, coal, were closer to hand and thus cheaper. Richard Arkwright, son of the famous mill owner, bought the site. William Carrick took over the tenancy to spin flax. In 1826 Robert Fidler converted Bell Mills into a paper, flour and bone mill. In 1828 there was a major redevelopment by Messrs. Hewes and Wren of Manchester. The 1834 Skerne Electoral Roll recorded a Thomas Hill at the mill.Bell Mills has been continually improved since the Wrigglesworths left, in order to compete effectively with the Hull mills. Rollers were installed in 1882, that is before Rank did so in Hull and they installed a turbine in 1893. The site is still used as a flour mill to this day, but not at the original mill as this burned down in 1949
