Original German post WW2 Mine Rescue Medal in Gold for 20 Years' Service (Grubenwehr-Ehrenzeichen), IN GOOD CONDITION BUT THERE ARE THREE DENT ON THE MEDAL, GREAT FINISH OTHERWISE

HISTORY OF THE AWARD:

Mine Rescue Medal - the official German designation for this award was “Grubenwehr-Ehrenzeichen,” sometimes translated as Mine Rescue Service Decoration. This medal was originally instituted on January 30, 1936. It was awarded to members of the Mine Rescue Service who performed outstanding rescue work, individuals who risked their lives to save others in the case of a mine disaster, and those with long service in the Mine Rescue Service. The awarding of the first version was suspended during the war. In 1952, the State Committee for Mining (Länderausschuss Bergbau), to which all the highest state mining authorities belong, committed to establishing a new medal of honour. However, the committee refrained from recommending that the states reintroduce such a medal of honour, even though mining is an exclusively state matter. Rather, the Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, as the representative of this most extensive and important branch of industry in the country, was asked to make a corresponding request to the Federal President. This happened on September 15, 1952. The draft of the foundation decree essentially corresponded to the wording of the ordinance from 1938. On July 14, 1953, Federal President Theodor Heuss donated the mine rescue service medal. The Foundation Decree was last amended on December 8, 1965. The award is given both in recognition of many years of active and exemplary work in the mine rescue services (20 years of service for the gold level and 15 years of service for the silver level) and for individual rescue efforts. It is therefore primarily a loyalty service badge. Each level of the Mark of Honor can only be awarded once. Prior possession of the previous level is not required for awarding the Medal of Honor in Gold. Each honored soldier receives the portable badge of honor and a certificate of award, as well as a medal miniature. Those entitled to propose are responsible for handing out the awards. Exceptionally, the documents were handed over personally on June 23, 1954 by Federal President Heuss, on December 9, 1974 by Federal President Scheel and on December 6, 1982 by Federal President Carstens.
